Health Literacy for CHWs

Course Description: 

The Health Literacy for Community Health Workers (CHWs) course introduces you to health literacy basics and helps you consider its importance in your work. The course will help you build health literacy knowledge and skills to help community members understand and use health information and services. 

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, you should be able to

• Identify how health literacy can improve communication and health outcomes

• Explain the role of communication in health literacy

• Describe an iterative outreach process and explain how communication creates information access

• Define plain language and describe strategies for using plain language in your interactions with community members

• Explain the benefits and challenges of verbal communication, and describe strategies to make verbal communication easier, more respectful, and more empathetic

• Learn to evaluate information sources of credibility and counteract misinformation respectfully

• Describe strategies for practicing cultural responsiveness and explain why this practice is important
